VACCINATING OUR CAMPUS
These opportunities have arisen due to the dedicated work of our students and faculty and staff as well as the great partnerships we have in the Helena community.
On March 26, Carroll College was given 100 doses of the Moderna vaccine from the Helena Indian Alliance/Leo Pocha Memorial Clinic. Through the determined work of Carroll’s Public Health and Nursing students and Professor Kelly Parsley’s tireless advocacy on our behalf, this opportunity came to fruition with our students receiving valuable hands-on experience in the process.
Today and yesterday’s Pfizer vaccination clinic in the Campus Center was a result of an offer by Lewis & Clark Public Health of 400 Pfizer vaccines for the Carroll community to be administered by St. Peter’s Health pharmacy students with Carroll’s Public Health students managing set up, sign up, flow, and monitoring areas. Second dose clinics are scheduled for May 5 & 6.
Through a combination of efforts, we are pleased to be doing our best to provide COVID-19 vaccination opportunities for all who want it in our Carroll community.
We are encouraging all students and employees to get vaccinated for COVID-19, but also recognize it is a personal decision.
DOWNSY DAY
John Downs, nicknamed “Downsy,” was a beloved psychology professor at Carroll who died from leukemia in 2002. In 2004, a proclamation was signed at Carroll College making John’s birthday, April 15, "Downsy Day" on campus, a day when members of the Carroll community are encouraged to perform unselfish acts of service, kindness, compassion, patience, generosity and love according to their own inspiration.

CARROLL SPRING MAGAZINE
We hope you enjoy the stories in this issue including features on our new Master of Social Work program as well as how our political science students used this past election cycle as a hands-on learning experience. We also featured student photography and reflections from Garrett Thompson’s Art -113 Digital Photography course. In addition, we included highlights from the academic year, a tribute to Fr. Jeremiah Sullivan, accomplishments of our student-athletes, and an overview of our COVID-19 wastewater testing collaboration with the community. The magazine also includes our 2019-20 Annual Report. AWARDS & RECOGNITION
Vinny Gallardo, a sophomore from Butte, was named 10th best speaker. Gallardo and sophomore Roisin O’Neill of Lake Oswego, Oregon, reached the semifinals. Senior Teigen Tremper of Whitefish and junior Taylor Potts of Great Falls were quarterfinalists.“Denver was a lot of fun because it felt like everyone on the team was at the top of their game,” said Mansfield. “Towards the end of the tournament, we were mostly competing against our own teammates to go forward. We really focused on having fun this tournament, and I think that was huge.”
Meanwhile, competing at the University of Southern California (USC) earlier on February 28, the first-year team of Ally Haegele of Helena and Matt Glimm of Kalispell, reached the championship round in the novice division.
Western States and USC tournaments were the last “national warm-up” events on the Talking Saints’ path before competing (virtually) at the national championships at the University of Pennsylvania, April 17-19. Read more here.
In December, we shared the news in Dr. Cech’s Friday Update that Carroll senior Michael Henderson of Eugene, OR, had his research published in the November 2020 issue of Science Advances. His latest accomplishment is that he will be presenting his research at the 2021 virtual National Council on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) conference.
“Carroll College faculty and staff have graciously supported my research opportunity at Oregon Health & Sciences University (OHSU) through the Cell, Developmental and Cancer Biology (CDCB) Internship,” said Henderson. “Representing Carroll College with an oral presentation at the 2021 NCUR conference will conclude my undergraduate research career. After graduating from Carroll College with a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, I will be returning to CDCB Department at OHSU. As a return CDCB intern, I will rejoin the Sahay Lab to continue advancing research in gene therapeutics for Cystic Fibrosis. In parallel with summer research, I will be submitting medical school applications and taking the MCAT. Undergraduate biomedical research has taught me that the development of advanced therapeutics from benchtop to patient bedside is possible through the success of a collaborative effort.”
Every year, Reach Higher Montana awards up to 80 - $1,000 scholarships to Montana students through the Reach Higher Montana Scholarship program. This year, 12 of the total 81 recipients statewide will be or are Carroll students! Congratulations to current students Katie Donaldson, Ashley Braaksma, Bellicia Hawk, Emma Putnam, Michael Day, Katelyn McKay, Nicole Williams, Whitney Durocher, Brooklyn Kenelty, and Cara White and incoming Saints, Katherine Bold and Abraham Montalvo.
Carroll College junior communications and public relations major Emily Murgel of East Helena, MT, has received a $1,500 Reverend Frank Lawrence Harrington (ANAVICUS) Scholarship for the 2021-2022 academic year. The award is in recognition of academic achievement, leadership potential and spiritual conduct in keeping with the best traditions of The American Legion and Carroll College. Murgel is specializing in marketing and print journalism with a minor in social media. Her long-term goal is to work in either the nonprofit sector or healthcare administration to increase awareness and funding through grant writing. Read more here.

SUTHERS KEYNOTES INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
Staying quite busy over her sabbatical, professor and chair of the Anthrozoology department, Dr. Marie Suthers is the closing all-conference speaker for the Healing with Horse Online Symposium, an international symposium for “equine facilitators and others wishing to team with horses to aid in experiential learning and coaching in horsemanship, mounted or unmounted work, therapy, healing, and spiritual enrichment.” The symposium runs Thursday - Sunday, April 22 - 25 (April 23 - 26 in Aus/NZ).
On Sunday, April 25 (and Monday for the AUS/NZ audience), Dr. Suthers will facilitate an interactive all-conference forum to discuss what college and other training programs that seek to support the growth of Equine Assisted Services (EAS) into a career industry need to know to provide the best training and education for students.

RECENTLY PUBLISHED
Congratulations to new Anthrozoology faculty member, Dr. Margo DeMello on having two new books published this year. One is the second edition of one of her textbooks, Animals and Society: An Introduction to Human-Animal Studies, and the other is a new encyclopedia called On the Job: An Encyclopedia of Unique Occupations around the World.
Dr. DeMello is an internationally known leader in Anthrozoology, having helped to build the field through her work as the first program director of Human-Animal Studies at the Animals & Society Institute, and through the publication of the very first textbook in the field, the first edition of Animals and Society: An Introduction to Human-Animal Studies. Prior to Carroll, she taught in the Anthrozoology Masters program at Canisius College for seven years. Learn more about Dr. DeMello here.
