Music at Carroll College

At Carroll College, course offerings in music aim to serve students on two levels:

  1. to allow those students who have had prior background in music to continue their development, and
  2. to provide an initial experience in music to those students who have not previously had the opportunity or desire to study music.

The focus of the music program is on acquiring skills and knowledge to complement the student's major and enhance liberal arts education.

Our Purpose
Our goal is to give students a greater appreciation for music as an art form and a vehicle for self-expression. We provide quality instruction to challenge and enrich all students through music studies.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Students will broaden their range of interest in and understanding of music.
  2. Students will achieve growth in musical skills and knowledge.
  3. Students will have experiences in music that enhance creativity.
  4. Students will gain exposure to a variety of aesthetics, approaches and concepts in music that will enhance appreciation of music as an art form.

Facilities
Music classes are held in the lower level of Guadalupe Hall. The music classroom includes a lecture area and a lab that is equipped with digital pianos, synthesizers, Macintosh computers, and MIDI capabilities.

Carroll College Choir

The Carroll College Choir (Music 129/130) is the primary mixed-voice choir at Carroll.  The choir is open to all students and rehearses from 2:00-2:50 P.M. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  Each semester, the choir performs a major concert of its own in addition to occasionally providing anthems and service music for Mass at the Cathedral of St. Helena and the All Saints' Chapel on Carroll's campus.  The choir also performs at other functions on campus. A limited number of choral scholarships are available to students enrolled in this choir.

Liturgical Choir

The Liturgical Choir is a student-led group of singers and instrumentalists who provide service music for the weekly Sunday evening Masses on campus.  Rehearsals are usually one night a week. Interested students can get connected to the liturgical choir Mass leaders once on campus.

Choir Scholarships

A limited number of Choral Scholarships are available to students regardless of major. Students wishing to be considered for Choral Scholarships should contact Director Michael Gray at mdgray@carroll.edu to make arrangements for a Choral Scholarship Audition. The audition normally consists of vocalization to test your range, pitch memory drills, and melodic and rhythmic sightreading. Students who receive Choral Scholarships are required to register for one of the choirs each semester.

About the Pep Band

The Carroll College Pep Band provides live musical entertainment for football, volleyball, and basketball games. Playing music from a variety of eras and genres while cheering on Carroll athletes, the ensemble is a key part of the spirited atmosphere of a Carroll College gameday.

Interested in joining?

The pep band is open to all students with experience playing woodwind, brass, or percussion instruments. For more information, contact Pep Band Coordinator Rebecca Kagerer.

Interested in supporting?

The funding for much of what the band needs - instruments, equipment, music, and more - is provided through generous donations from supporters in the Carroll community. Here’s some examples of how you can help the band:

  • $50 will provide the entire ensemble with a new song – have an impact on the music the band plays!
  • $100 buys the whole band dinner, keeping the band in the stands for long double-headers!
  • Larger donations allow the band to invest in instruments, support the student scholarships Carroll provides many musicians, and help the band continue to grow and develop!

For more information on how you can help the pep band, contact Student Activities Director Patrick Harris.
