"What I appreciate most about Carroll's communications department are the people. The faculty challenged and supported me in everything I wanted to do - from competitive internships to studying abroad. Some of the best people I know I met through the communication's department and I am still close friends with several graduates of the program." - Patrick Manning
Patrick has fond memories of campus ministry at Carroll and how it prepared him for his post-graduation role as a member of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. He appreciates the opportunity to complete an internship with KTVH on the Carroll campus. While interning at KTVH, Patrick was allowed to work in the newsroom and even reported on some stories. He also spoke about his fond memories of the many Carroll faculty he worked with.
Patrick's liberal arts education from Carroll was invaluable to him. One of the skills he cherishes is empathy which he believes is not a skill most journalists possess.
After his first job with an ABC affiliate in Wausau, Wisconsin, Patrick went on to spend 4.5 years with the national FOX News channel and then moved to his current position at CNBC. Patrick shared some recent major stories he has covered including the terrorist attacks in London and Manchester, UK, the mosque shooting in Quebec City, the Chelsea bombing, the tragic mass shooting in Orlando at Pulse Nightclub, and the deaths of five police officers in Dallas. He also covered Hurricanes Harvey and Matthew.
The liberal arts education I received at Carroll College provided me with a better tone for my life and career overall. It is important for me to be able to share empathy with someone I am interviewing who lost everything in a flood for example.
I gained a lot of theory and field experience double majoring in Communication and Public Relations at Carroll. The program in television production has greatly prepared me for my future endeavors.
