I have never been a big fan of Halloween. I have never liked dressing in costume, going trick-or-treating for candy, or indulging in the scarier aspects of the holiday.
The little girl that appeared in my office door in O'Connell Hall today almost melted my bah-humbug, frown-on-Halloween heart. She was tagging along behind her parents, as well as her older brother, who were trick-or-treating the offices in O'Connell Hall before all of the costumed kids from Broadwater Elementary walked over to campus for their annual trick-or-treat visit.
The little girl reminded me of Cindy Lou Who in the Dr. Seuss movie, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. I told her that I liked her pumpkin and she gave me a big smile. I asked her if people were putting candy in her pumpkin. She nodded her head with a happy smile. I asked her if she was having fun trick-or-treating and she again nodded her head with a big smile on her face. Her parents--who had moved down the hallway in O'Connell with their older son--called for the little girl to join them. The girl looked at me, smiled, and said, "Love you." I told the little girl with a big smile on my face, "I love you, too."
Her dad, a co-worker at Carroll, overheard the brief conversation with his daughter. He walked back to my office door and told me, "I love you, too, Jim." JDH
