INSTRUCTIONS FOR INDEPENDENT STUDENTS

This Independent Student Aid Estimator is designed for U.S. citizens (or permanent residents) who are independent of their parents for support. According to federal regulations, you are independent if you can answer "yes" to one or more of the following statements.

  • You were born before January 1, 1986.
  • You are an active-duty member or veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • You will be a graduate or professional student in 2009-2010.
  • You are married.
  • Both your parents are deceased, you are an emancipated minor, you are in legal guardianship, or after your 13th birthday you were in foster care, a ward of the court or legally adopted.
  • You have legal dependents (other than a spouse).

If you do not meet any of these criteria, please complete the Dependent Student Aid Estimator. If you have questions, please call us for more information.

Estimate your eligibility

The information on this form will be used to estimate your eligibility for student financial aid for the 2009-2010 school year. We have made it as brief and easy as possible. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) that you will eventually complete collects a great deal more information with much more detailed instructions. If your financial circumstances are at all unusual or complicated, please contact us to find out how to complete this form and still get a good estimate.

Divorced, Separated, or Widowed Students

If you are married, include information about yourself and your spouse. If you are divorced, separated, or widowed, do not include information about your spouse.

Foreign Tax Filers

If you filed a tax return in a foreign country, check the box marked “Form 1040” under question 13. Convert all figures in questions 15 through 23 to U.S. dollars, using the exchange rate that is in effect today.

PLEASE NOTE:

This estimator cannot be completed by the Carroll College Financial Aid Office without submission of:
1) A college GPA, or
2) A high school GPA and at least one test score.

Please make a copy of this for your records.
