Class of 1938
The Helena High class of 1935 recently celebrated its 70th reunion with alums reveling at Helena's Jorgenson's Inn & Suites. One member of the class is Homer Phillips, who attended Carroll from 1937-38 and played football as a Fighting Saint. Homer was one of the co-founders of the Last Chance Stampede in 1964, which has been held at the Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds annually now for 41 years. He helped develop Little League baseball fields at the complex now known as Ryan Fields. In 1960, Homer took over the management of Phillips Dairy, which was founded by his father in 1918. Class of 1948
Ron "Swen" Swanson, who attended Carroll from 1945-48, is part of a group of 30 friends hailing from Anaconda, Mont., and now living in the Missoula area. They meet on the first Wednesday of each month at the Bodega Bar and Grill on Ryman Street in the
Garden City to reminisce and reestablish their bonds. He played basketball at Carroll from 1945 to 1947 but then transferred to the University of Montana to receive his degrees. Swanson, 76, spent his professional life as a guidance counselor and taught biology,

Class of 1950
Elsa Koski, class of 1950, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Southwest Oregon Area Health Education Center on Sept 18, 2004, for her work in rural healthcare. The Honorable Robert E. Waska Sr., class of 1950, continues busy into his retirement. He continues to give talks and lead discussions on the Foreign Service and world affairs throughout northern California to various civic organizations and clubs. Bob and his wife Frances live in Oakmont, a senior community outside of Santa Rosa, California.
Class of 1951
On September 30, 2005, Carroll Professor Emeritus of Languages and Literature, Hank Burgess, class of 1951, presented a lecture, "A Rocket Ride: From the Celts to the Helena Hibernians," at the annual Montana History Conference. On May 28, 2005, the Rev. Ed Courtney of Butte, Mont., celebrated the golden anniversary of his ordination. Bishop George L. Thomas lauded Father Courtney for his 50 years of service as a priest and concelebrated at three Masses in Fr. Courtney's honor that weekend. For more, read on at father courtney.
Class of 1952
Charlotte Ann (Goldsworthy) Kirshaw, class of 1952, has announced that, after over 40 years as a registered nurse, she has retired as night supervisor at Galen State Hospital. She has recently relocated from Racetrack, Mont., to Spokane, Wash., to be near and enjoy her family. With her daughter Katie, she shares hobbies, including decorating and gardening. She also has a grandson, Chris, and two beautiful great-grandchildren, Kaleb, age 4, and Shei, 2.
Rev. Msgr. John F. McCarthy, P.A., class of 1952, has established a new Society of Oblates of Wisdom house in St. Louis, Missouri. As the Society's general director, he moved into priests' quarters on August 3, 2005, and set up the Society's operating headquarters. The Society of Oblates of Wisdom house is a study center and house of formation for those preparing for entry into theological seminary. Prior to moving to St. Louis, Msgr. McCarthy, a Diocese of Helena priest, spent 35 years working for the Vatican Congregation for the Oriental Churches and as Director of the Vatican Congregation offices of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association and Pontifical Mission for Palestine. He recently completed four years as pastor of St. Wesceslaus Parish in Wisconsin.
Class of 1953
Pat (Flynn) McCarthy, class of 1953, sends word that she loves Carroll College. Pat is married to Charley McCarthy, class of 1953, and both live in Corona, Calif.
Clarence A. "Bud" Ryan, class of 1953, a pioneer researcher in plant biochemistry and the first Washington State University faculty member to be admitted to the National Academy of Sciences, received an honorary doctoral degree from WSU this May during commencement exercises. The WSU Board of Regents approved the honor at its January 28 meeting. The university has not awarded an honorary doctorate since 1995 and has awarded only four such degrees in the last half-century. Ryan, an emeritus faculty member in the Institute of Biological Chemistry, has continued an active research effort well into his "retirement" years and is internationally known for his discoveries that plants produce natural insecticides to protect themselves from predation by herbivores. These natural insecticides, known as protease inhibitors, prevent insects and microorganisms from digesting food proteins. Born in Butte, Mont., Ryan earned his bachelor's in chemistry from Carroll and a master's and doctoral degree in chemistry from Montana State University. He came to WSU in 196an assistant agricultural chemist and assistant professor of biochemistry. From 1977 to 1980, Ryan served as chair of the Department of Agricultural Chemistry, then served as acting director of WSU's Institute for Biological Chemistry from 1989-90. In 1991, he was named the Charlotte Y. Martin Distinguished Professor of Biochemistry and Plant Physiology. Ryan was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1986, and throughout his career, has received a long list of honors and awards from professional organizations and from WSU. Several of his research articles have been ranked among the most-cited in their discipline.
Class of 1954
Ray Skillestad, class of 1954, recently visited Carroll's Alumni Office, where he passed along the word that his daughter, Kayreen Skillestad-Bangert, class of 1977, is the principal at Rossiter School in Helena. The University of Great Falls received a donation of one-of-a-kind handmade silver chalices once owned by the late Rev. Joe-Pat Sullivan, Carroll class of 1954, Saints sports hall-of-famer and longtime Carroll professor. For more on the story, read on at:chalices.
Class of 1957
On October 20, the Helena Ancient Order of Hibernians awarded Father Tom O'Donnell, class of 1957, the Archbishop Alexander J. Brunett Medal for social justice work. The presentation took place at the Hibernian Charter Dinner in Helena, with Bishop George Thomas, class of 1972, conferring the medal and reading Archbishop Brunett's personal letter commending Fr. O'Donnell. This annual award honors a Montana Catholic who has demonstrated commitment to social justice without fanfare - good acts with humility. Fr. O'Donnell is pastor of Sts. Cyril & Methodius Church in East Helena and a member of Carroll's board of trustees.
Class of 1960
Thomas and Yvonne (Gauthier) Duffy, both class of 1960, report that after Yvonne's 23 years working for the CIA and Thomas' 20 years in the cattle business (during which he served as Cattle Livestock Company president), they celebrated their retirement by walking in the Camino de Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
Larry Lehman, class of 1960, reports that he is currently spending the winter in Yuma, Ariz. Larry spent 25 years working in Montana education: six as a high school English teacher (3 in Winifred, 2 in Eureka, 1 in Roy). He earned his master's in education at the University of Montana in 1973 then served nearly 20 years as the superintendent of schools in Winifred and Power, Mont. In 2000, he was elected to the Montana House of Representatives, where he was one of four Carroll alumni to serve in the 2001 session. He was re-elected in 2003. He also sends word that his daughter, Linda, was honored in February 2005 to serve as the sign-language interpreter for President George W. Bush's speech in Great Falls, Mont.
Class of 1962
Julia Sloan Kirschel, class of 1962, of Mather, Calif., sends word that she retired from the California Department of Health Services two years ago. She served the department as an R.N. and case manager.
Class of 1963
A world traveler and educator, (John) Kirwin Werner of Ronan, Mont., has studied amphibians and reptiles for much of his adult life. The 1963 Carroll graduate and Saints football player recently co-authored a field guide entitled "Amphibians and Reptiles of Montana." After graduating from Carroll with a biology degree, Werner was accepted to the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., where he earned a doctorate in biology. Class of 1964
Gary Bowar, class of 1964, of Winner, S.D., has announced that, after 40 years with the South Dakota Department of Social Services, he retired in December 2004.
William A. Shields, sociology class of 1964, who has nearly three decades of experience heading institutions of higher education, has been named president of the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville, effective Aug. 1, 2005. Recently after being named president of Pitt, he spoke at the 18h-annual academic convocation. A Pitt alumnus who currently serves as interim president of the University of Maine (UM) at Presque Isle, Shields oversaw the construction of a $9 million UM health and recreation facility. From 2002 to 2003, Shields was the interim president of Pitt's Bradford campus, where he oversaw completion of several campus construction projects and led a $16 million capital campaign. He serves as senior consultant to the Mission and Identity Project of the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. Class of 1966
Dr. Richard Buswell, class of 1966, photographer and author of the books, "Echoes: A Visual Reflection" and "Silent Frontier," has announced the latest showings of his acclaimed black and white photographs. The Montana Museum of Art and Culture of the University of Montana is currently curating and circulating a national tour of 55 Buswell ghost town and homestead photographs, entitled "Silent Frontier." They were previously on display at the University of Idaho in Moscow and this winter appeared at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman. In spring 2006, the works will be shown at Utah State University.
Longtime Montana labor leader Jim McGarvey, class of 1966, has announced he is running for executive secretary of the Montana AFL-CIO. Mr. McGarvey, 63, is the president of the Montana AFL-CIO and vice president of the MEA-MFT, the state's largest union that represents school and government employees. A Butte, Mont., native, he has held a union card since working as a laborer at age 16. He graduated with a degree in sociology from Carroll and taught at Butte High School for six years. In 1971, he began working at the Montana Federation of Teachers as its executive director and president and built it up until its merger with the Montana Education Association to form the MEA-MFT in 1999.
Class of 1967
Virginia Rose (Stockert) Pinard, class of 1967, of Penacook, N.H., was nominated for New Hampshire teacher of the year for her work at Belmont High School. She has also served as treasurer of American Association of Teachers of French, New Hampshire. For her 60th birthday, she celebrated by skydiving.
Class of 1969
Bob Farren, class of 1969, the rate superintendent for the Butte-Silver Bow Metro Sewer in western Montana, was recently honored by the Tri-State Water Quality Council as the recipient of its 2004 Scott Hall Memorial Award, established to recognize an individual with exceptional integrity in environmental protection. Farren has worked for the past 10 years helping the Council address pollution from the nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus, which cause excessive algae growth in the Clark Fork River. As a key member of the Council's Voluntary Nutrient Reduction Program, Farren led efforts to remove the Butte-Silver Bow wastewater discharge from the river during the summer months when algae growth is most severe. Class of 1970
Army Reserve Sgt. 1st Class Michael P. Andersen, class of 1970, a postal platoon sergeant from Helena, Mont., is a member of the 48th Brigade Combat Team and completed desert combat training earlier this year at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, Calif.
Former Montana Governor Marc Racicot, class of 1970, has been swlected as president of the American Insurance Association (AIA). He joins AIA after serving as chairman of the Bush-Cheney 2004 campaign and as chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC), which elected him to the post in 2002. Prior to his tenure at the RNC, Racicot was a partner in the law firm of Bracewell and Patterson (now Bracewell and Giuliani). Racicot served as Montana's governor (1993-2001) and attorney general (1989-1993). He is a University of Montana Law School graduate.
Class of 1971
Jeff Spurlin, who attended Carroll 1971, was recently featured in the Helena Independent Record for his booming business right across the street from Carroll's campus. The Filling Station Creperie, a fave among Carroll students, faculty and staff, serves up crepes, café and cuisine française at the busy corner of Benton and Euclid avenues. Class of 1972
Mick Robinson, class of 1972, a former chief of staff and policy
adviser for former Governor Marc Racicot, has been named the
associate commissioner of fiscal affairs for the Montana University
System. Until he takes his new post on September 12, he will
continue serving in his current post as the fiscal services
division administrator for the Montana Department of Public Health
and Human Services. Mick joined the state health department in 2001
after serving as executive budget director during the last year of
the Racicot administration. He was the director of the Revenue
Department from 1993-1997 and was the accounting and personnel
administrator for the Justice Department from 1989-1993. After
earning his accounting degree from Carroll, he received a master's
in business administration from Washington State University. He
also spent 11 years as a professor of accounting at Carroll. In
1997, he was inducted into Carroll's Athletic Hall of Fame.
Class of 1973
Tim Racicot, class of 1973, recently announced he is stepping
down as football coach at Frenchtown High School in Frenchtown,
Mont., after 32 years. The 53-year-old Mr. Racicot, the
third-winningest football coach in Montana prep history, resigned
as assistant principal/activities director earlier in the spring,
effective at the end of the school year. His career at Frenchtown
began right after his graduation from Carroll. He plans to join
Coach Bobby Hauck's staff at the University of Montana.
Class of 1974
J. Andrew "Andy" O'Neill, class of 1974, serves as
president and director of Valley Bank in Helena, Mont., and was
recently appointed a member of the St. Peter's Hospital Board of
Directors. He serves as a board member of the St. Peter's
Foundation, Helena Rotary Club, Montana Bankers' Association and
Helena Area Chamber of Commerce.
Class of 1975
Helena Police Chief Troy McGee, class of 1975, was recently
elected president of the Montana Association of Chiefs of Police
for the 2005-2007 term. McGee has been with the Helena Police
Department for 30 years, including nine as chief. He is a lifelong
Helena resident and graduated from the FBI National Academy at
Quantico, Va., in 1993.
Class of 1977
Barbara Kozlowski Cope, class of 1977, is searching for
classmates from Carroll's class of 1977. She currently
resides in Augusta, Georgia, and works as a nursing supervisor at

Michael R. Prendergast, class of 1977, was elected to membership
in the North American Academy of Liturgy (NAAL) at the academy's
annual gathering in Louisville, KY. Prendergast is the editor of
the Pastoral Press book "Voices from the Council," which includes a
chapter on Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen (former Carroll president
and Carroll class of 1943) at the second Vatican Council.
Thirty years ago, Carroll held its own version of "Million
Dollar Baby" with two Carroll women squaring off in the
boxing ring during the 1975 Carroll Smoker. Juniors Sharon (Egging)
Gartner, class of 1976, and Louise Hoffmann, class of 1977, duked
it out in a controversial fight recently featured in the Helena

Class of 1978
Nikki (Sassano) DeWolf, class of 1978, will be promoted this
November to commander of the 208th Regiment Montana Regional
Training Institute. As a lieutenant colonel, she will assume this
battalion-level command as only the second woman to enjoy this
level of command with the Montana Army National Guard.
Class of 1979
Robert Bayuk, class of 1979, recently appeared in a one-man play
he wrote and starred in to raise money for life-saving organ
transplants. He is awaiting a kidney and pancreas donation and is
fighting diabetes and renal failure. To read more about

On April 9, 2005, Colleen Brady, class of 1979, received an
award from the Academy of The Holy Names in Tampa, Fla., of which
Colleen has served as president for the past seven years. During
her tenure, Colleen has raised over $15 million for the school and
personally oversaw a huge remodeling, construction,
academic-enhancement and technology-building program for the
academy. Campus expansion included refurbished classrooms and new
athletic facilities, from fields to a gymnasium to a swimming pool.
She also raised money for and supervised other significant
construction projects, including a new bridge, a 14,000-square-foot
student center, a 31,000-square-foot library and media center, and
a fine and performing arts classroom building. For her service and
achievements on the school's behalf, the academy held an
award celebration in her honor and named its new campus center
after her. Established in 1881, the Academy of The Holy Names
overlooks Tampa Bay and is part of the Catholic school system. With
over 900 students, the school serves children from pre-K through
12th grade and hailing from a variety of faiths and backgrounds.
Colleen holds a master's from the University of Wisconsin.
She is a 1973 graduate of Big Sandy High School.
Class of 1980
Susan McCue Kavon, class of 1980, of Plentywood, Mont., reports
that her daughter Stephanie is a freshman at Carroll and landed the
title role in the Performing Arts Department play,
"Cinderella" which debuted in mid-November in the
Performing Arts Center at Carroll.
Class of 1981
Flora Bearchild Running Crane, class of 1981, of Browning,
Mont., says that she became a public leader in her community after
graduating from Carroll and adds that she credits Carroll for her
successes in leadership roles.
Wendy Rickman, class of 1981, a veteran social worker with the
Iowa Department of Human Services is moving to Des Moines, Iowa, to
accept her appointment as the department's administrator of
the Des Moines service area, the agency's largest. Her new
job will focus on 14 counties in central Iowa, and she will lead
500 employees there starting on May 2. During the 1980s, Wendy
served as a residential treatment worker at a home for teenagers.
In 1987, she took a job as a child abuse investigator with the
State of Iowa in Davenport. She earned her master's degree in
social work from the University of Iowa in 1996. Last year, she was
the project manager for the redesign of Iowa's child abuse
system.
The Miami Dolphins' Bryan Wiedmeier, class of 1981, is a
candidate in the Seattle Seahawks' search for a team
president, NFL sources said recently. Wiedmeier has been the
Dolphins' executive vice president and chief operating
officer since January 2002. He oversees the business side of the
Dolphins' operations, including the salary cap and player
contracts. He was a three-year starting center at Carroll College
before joining the Dolphins in 1981. In 24 NFL seasons, all with
Miami, Wiedmeier has held the titles of assistant general manager,
vice president for administration and senior vice president for
business operations.
Class of 1983
Ron Collins, Jr., who attended Carroll from 1982-83, was
recently inducted into the Butte Sports Hall of Fame. Ron proved
himself an outstanding all-around athlete at Butte High in the
1980s, when he competed in football, wrestling and track for the
Bulldogs. In 1981, he was the captain on Butte High's state
championship football team and was selected first-team All-State as
a defensive end. During the 1982 wrestling season, Collins went
through the year undefeated at 167 pounds to win the state title
and helped the team take the state wrestling championship. In
track, Collins won the javelin competition at the state track meet
as the Bulldogs took the state crown. He is one of the few members
in the history of Butte High to compete on three state title teams
in one school year. Collins played football at Carroll College and
Montana Tech, where he was selected first-team All-Frontier
Conference defensive end in 1985.
Class of 1985
Jacqueline Brown, class of 1985, of East Helena, reports that
she has three children: Morgan, age 15, Jace, age 9, and Avalon,
age 1.
Class of 1986
Toby DeWolf, class of 1986, the owner/manager of Helena's
Bert and Ernie's restaurant and Bleachers sports bar,
recently oversaw the painting of a new Carroll College mural on the
walls of his establishment. Bert and Ernie's resident artist
Joe Crowley created the mural, which depicts the Carroll hilltop
and the Fighting Saints' record as the 2002, 2003, and 2004
national champions. Toby made sure he left extra room and a comma
after 2004, for the next championship crown year. The Saints fan
says he adorned Bleachers with the mural as a permanent display of
his school pride. "It's an honor to be associated with
Carroll," Toby told QNs.
David Austin Grose, class of 1986, has joined venture capital
firm Shasta Ventures as Chief Financial Officer. Austin has 14
years' experience in venture capital finance roles, most
recently as CFO of Allegis Capital, a $500-million family of funds.
Austin's prior experience includes CFO roles with Associated
Venture Investors and MK Global Ventures. He began his career as a
CPA with Arthur Andersen & Co., where he led audit and tax
engagements for clients in a variety of industries. Austin earned
his M.B.A. with honors from the American Graduate School of
International Management (Thunderbird).
Class of 1987
Kathy Ramirez, class of 1987, is the new membership director of
the Helena Chamber of Commerce. She's lived in Helena for
over 22 years, during which time she has served as the director of
the Lewis and Clark County United Way and been a member and first
female president of the Helena Kiwanis. Kathy and husband John have
owned and operated the Mountain Meadow Inn Bed and Breakfast since
1996 and have five children.
Class of 1989
Lisa (Downs) Bullock, class of 1989, moved from Washington,
D.C., back to Helena in June 2004 just in time to give birth to her
second daughter, Alexandria Faith, on July 29, 2004. Lisa's older
daughter, Caroline Grace, is now 2 and a half. Lisa continues to
work as an IT software engineer for Northrop Grumman. In August
2004, her husband Stephen started his own law firm, Bullock Law
Firm, in Helena.
The Trustees of Miles Community College voted without opposition
to name Dr. Garret McFarland, class of 1989, to the vacant seat on
the board. McFarland, 38, takes the seat of Tom Albers, a 10-year
board veteran, who resigned in mid-November. The term McFarland is
filling ends with the MCC trustee election in April. McFarland says
he plans to run in that election, seeking to keep the seat to which
he was just appointed. A dentist practicing in Miles City,
McFarland attended dentistry school at the University of Minnesota.
He and wife Tammie have a daughter, age 10, and a son, age 9.
Class of 1990
Shannon Fitzpatrick Kimball, class of 1990, of Bigfork, Mont.,
is a botanist who, with Missoula photographer and botanist Peter
Lesica, recently released a new book called "Wildflowers of Glacier
National Park." Kimball published the book herself under the name
Trillium Press, and Helena's Riverbend Publishing is helping
to promote the book. Three years in the making, her book details
more than 300 of Glacier's wildflowers, grasses and sedges.
Kimball, former president of her local chapter of the Montana
Native Plant Society, provides interesting notes on each of the
plants, such as their medicinal uses by Native Americans. She
graduated from Carroll with a degree in biology, then picked up her
master's degree at Oregon State University. You can order and buy

Recently, the Helena Independent Record published its
second-annual special publication of "20 Under 40," listing 20
locals under age 40 whom the IR believes represent the best and
brightest of Helena. Five of the 20 are Carroll grads. One of the
Saints selected was John Michelotti, class of 1990.
Michelotti is an orthopedic surgeon and the team physician for
Carroll College, Helena High, Capital High and the Helena Brewers
baseball team. He is on the board at St. Peter's Hospital.
Class of 1991
Flathead High School Activities Director Mark Dennehy, class of
1991, of Kalispell, Mont., is Montana's Class AA Athletic Director
of the Year. The honor was bestowed on him by the Montana
Interscholastic Association of Athletic Administrators. Dennehy is
in his second year as a Class AA representative on the MIAAA board
of directors. He's also a member of the Montana Coaches Association
and the National Intercollegiate Association of Athletic
Administrators. Dennehy is a Butte native who taught in Butte
schools, where he coached football and wrestling before beginning
his teaching career at Flathead High 13 years ago. He taught world
history, economics and American history for the first eight years.

has overseen a successful athletic program at Flathead High. For

Head coach Troy Purcell, class of 1990, is leaving his post as
coach of the Havre High Blue Ponies, which he led to their first
championship in 34 years. He's moving on to coach Class AA
football at Bozeman High School. Purcell coached the Blue Ponies
for five years and compiled a 40-13 record that included four
playoff appearances. Last season, Havre won 12-straight games. He
has been a head coach for 14 years. Before arriving at Havre, he
coached for three years in Oregon and six more in Eureka, Mont.
Along the way, his teams won five conference championships and
finished second three times.
Class of 1992
Teri Calton, class of 1992, has been promoted to community bank
president for Wells Fargo in Helena. She will replace Tom Ellis,
who will retire in the first quarter of 2006. Since 2001, she has
managed Wells Fargo's four stores in Helena. She has 14 years of
experience in financial services, all with Wells Fargo. Previously,
she worked as a teller, credit analyst, personal banker, business
banker and store manager. She holds a degree in economics and
management from Carroll College and has done graduate work in
accounting.
Tom Goedde, class of 1992, is the director of marketing for EA
Sports (ea
sports).
Recently, the Helena Independent Record published its
second-annual special publication of "20 Under 40," listing 20
locals under age 40 whom the IR believes represent the best and
brightest of Helena. Five of the 20 are Carroll grads. One of the
Saints selected was Robert J. Jose, class of 1992. Jose is a
dentist, and has been involved professionally with the early
diagnosis and prevention of oral cancer. He is also involved in
supporting the Smiles for Life Foundation dedicated to serving
children's needs.
Nan LeFebvre, class of 1992, has joined the staff of Employee
Benefit Resources as a human resources consultant. Her areas of
consultation include salary surveys, policy manuals, training, and
recruitment and selection activities. She holds a master's from
Princeton University.
Class of 1994
Eileen Donnelly, class of 1994, of Billings, was recently
admitted to the Colorado State Bar. Donnelly earned her political
science degree from Carroll College and a juris doctorate from
Gonzaga Law School. She is practicing law in Colorado Springs,
Colo.
Angela Fink, class of 1994, now lives in Jakarta, Indonesia,
where she works as a school counselor for Jakarta International
School. She completed her master's degree at Montana State
University in 1996. From there, she went on to live and work for

Strait School District. She then spent four years in Anchorage as a
school counselor for the Anchorage School District and an adjunct

The Montana High School Association has named Brian Michelotti,
class of 1994, as an assistant director, effective August 1. A
Butte native, he played football as a Fighting Saint and earned
All-American honors. For the past 12 years, he has worked as
director of marketing and customer service for a Helena trucking
firm.

a neonatal intensive care nurse and an assistant professor in
nursing at Carroll.
Class of 1995
Kimme Evermann, class of 1995, recently received one of the
16th-annual Governor's Award for Excellence in Performance in 2005,
recognizing outstanding performance and dedication to state
government. For the past eight years, Kimme has worked for the
Senior and Long Term Care Division of the Montana Department of
Health & Human Services. She is the state SHIP (State Health
Insurance Assistance Program) director. SHIP is a national advocacy
program assisting Medicare beneficiaries, their families,
caregivers and other professionals in their rights, benefits and
options. She says, "with the passage of the Medicare
Modernization Act of 2003, all of us who provide this advocacy and
support are tasked with educating the public at large about
sweeping and historic changes. We have been very busy for the past
18 months!"
Karl and Gail (Peterson) Frey, both class of 1995, of Hillsboro,
Ore., report that they are the parents of twins Zachary and Grace,
who were born on October 27, 2002. Karl currently works in
marketing communications and Gail is an occupational therapist who
has taken some time off to be home with the children. She also
works as an independent sales consultant.
John Lefebvre, class of 1995, is currently serving in Husaybah,
Iraq, conducting security and stability operations.
The Montana Department of Public Health and Human
Services' Office of Planning, Coordination and Analysis has
hired Mary Noel, class of 1995, as a fiscal and policy coordinator.
She will be responsible for research and analysis related to new
department endeavors, including a Medicare prescription drug plan.
Mary has worked for DPHHS for six years, most recently as chief of
the Health Care Resources Bureau, where she managed the Children's
Health Insurance Plan and Children's Special Health Services. She
has completed course work for a master's degree in public
administration from the University of Montana.

Spencer is the outreach coordinator at the Lewis and Clark Library
and adjunct professor of communication at Carroll. She is the
president of the Board of Directors for Downtown Helena, Inc.
Class of 1996
Martin Janout, class of 1996, and wife Karen welcomed newborn
son Radek into the universe on September 1, 2005.
Tony (T.S.) Spencer, business class of 1996, of Laramie, Wyo.,
has been named an offensive line coach in the South Dakota Coyotes
football program. Most recently, Spencer served as a graduate
assistant for the offensive line at the University of Wyoming for
former Coyote football player and current Wyoming head coach Joe
Glenn in 2003-04. He coached in the Pioneer Pure Vision Bowl on
Dec. 23, 2004, when the Cowboys defeated UCLA 24-21, at Las Vegas,
Nev. From 1996-2002, Spencer was an assistant football coach at
Carroll, where he served as an assistant defensive backs coach from
1996-98 and wide receivers coach from 1999-2002. He also assisted
with recruiting. Spencer played Fighting Saints football at Carroll
in 1994-95, during which time he achieved NAIA second-team
All-American status at defensive back. Also in 1995, he was a
first-team All-Conference defensive back and second-team
All-Conference wide receiver. He has been a member of the American
Football Coaches Association since 2001. He is also a member of the
Black Coaches Association.
Erin Wilson, who attended Carroll from 1992 to 1996, married
Paul Selvig on August 21, 2004, at Mercer Island Covenant Church in
Mercer Island, Wash. Erin and Paul are both employed at Bright
Horizons Family Solutions. The newlyweds honeymooned in Hawaii and
made their first home in Woodinville, Wash.
Class of 1997
On August 1, 2005, pediatrician Michelle Danielson, M.D., class
of 1997, joined the staff of the recently expanded Strizich
Pediatric Clinic in Suite 101 of the Maria Dean Medical Office
Building next to St. Peter's Hospital in Helena. Formerly of
Helena, she earned her medical degree at the University of Nevada
School of Medicine in Reno, Nev., then completed her residency in
pediatrics at Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, where
she also served as chief resident. She also volunteered at a free
health clinic as part of a medical mission to Grenada.
Tony A. Fantozzi, class of 1997, and his wife Amy welcomed their
new child Zachary Isaac Fantozzi into the world on February 11,
2005. He weighed 8 pounds, 13 ounces, and was 21.5 long. Zachary
also has a big sister, Gabriella, age 1. They live in Monmouth,
Ill.

is an elementary school teacher and former president of the local

Stacy Stellflug Handley, class of 1997, earned her
master's in nursing as a family practitioner in 2004 from
Montana State University - Bozeman. She accepted a position at St.
Vincent Healthcare in Billings, Mont. On April 12, 2005, she and
husband Mike welcomed their first baby, Flynn Renick Handley, 20
inches high and a svelte 6 lbs., 11 oz.
Quinn O'Rourke, class of 1997, graduated on Jan. 14, 2005, from
Portland State University with a master's in international
management.
Class of 1998
Mark Johnson, class of 1998, and his wife Janet, class of 1998,
welcomed a baby boy, John William, into the world on August 10,
2005, in Seattle. Mark played football for the Fighting Saints from
1993-94 and after graduation taught school in the Boston area for
five years before moving to Seattle in 2003. He teaches history and
social studies at Seattle Prep High. Janet is a nurse at the V.A.
hospital in Seattle.
Lisa (Diederichs) Murphey, class of 1998, married Jed Murphey on
July 24, 2004, at Inglewood Country Club in Kenmore, Wash. Lisa is
in her sixth year of teaching special education in Woodinville,
Wash. The couple currently lives in Bothell, Wash., and they have a
1-year-old black lab named Cooper.
Katerine Schletz Saili, class of 1998, taught science as Peace
Corps volunteer in western Samoa in 2000-2001. She met and married
her husband Faiilagi Saili in Samoa in July 2004 then started work
at the American Samoa Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources
as a wildlife biologist working with sea turtles, fruit bats and
birds
Renée St. Martin-Wizeman, class of 1998, of Helena,
Mont., has been appointed director of the Diocese of Helena's
Office of Communications and editor of the Montana Catholic
newspaper. For the past five years, she worked as the Montana
Catholic's advertising coordinator, graphic designer and
website developer. She has been married to Dennis Wizeman, class of
1995, for the past four years. Since 2001, she has served has the
assistant coach of Carroll's Talking Saints forensics
team.
Class of 1999
Andrew Benson, class of 1999, of Baltimore, Maryland, is a
contributing author to a nursing pharmacology textbook that was
recently published by Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins. Andy is
currently working at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the Cardiology Care
Unit. In addition he is part-time faculty at Johns Hopkins
University School of Nursing.
Daysee "Kay" (Deutschman) Swant, class of 1999, and
her husband Jason live in Helena, Mont., where she runs a
successful quilting business out of their home studio and teaches
classes at a quilt store in town while Jason works for the Montana
Department of Public Health and Human Services. They spend their
free time being entertained by their three boys, Rigby James (3
years old), Kerwin Otto (1 year old), and Augustus Cole, who they
recently welcomed into the family on September 23, 2005.
Laura Tode, class of 1999, recently left her post as the youth
and education reporter for the Helena Independent Record and has
begun her new job with the Billings Gazette, effective September
27.
Kevin Van Nice, class of 1999, is the counselor at East Helena
Middle School.
Class of 2000
S. Annie Adams, class of 2000, has joined Shodair Children's
Hospital in Helena, Mont., as a certified genetic counselor in the
Medical Genetics Department. She will see patients in the
hospital's outreach clinics in Billings and eastern Montana as well
as in Helena. After graduating from Carroll, she earned her
master's degree at California State University-Northridge. She
previously worked at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where she
was a genetic counselor in the cytogenetics laboratory and also saw
patients for inherited predisposition to cancer.
Brian Bartle, class of 2000, of Issaquah, Wash., has been hired
by the engineering firm of MWH (Montgomery Watson Harza). The firm
employs over 6,000 all over the globe and maintains offices in 36
countries.
Levi Burkle, class of 2000, made a new CD that went for sale on
October 28. The CD is a recording of a live performance in Helena
with musicians James Hinkley on cello and Mark Hutchinson on
cornet. October 28th's CD release concert took place in
Freeland Hall, in Freeland, Wash., and featured all the CD artists.
The concert benefited the South Whidbey Commons. After the
October CD, Burkle released another new music CD that went on sale
in November. His CD release concert took place here in
Heelena, in the Montana Club Rathskeller, November 19. The
second CD featured a select number of songs from an August 2004
live performance of Levi, Hinkley and Hutchinson at the Carroll
College Performing Arts Center. The CD release concert in Helena
landed in the middle of Levi's Pacific Northwest concert

Thomas Collins, class of 2000, of Brea, Calif., was married on
September 24, 2005, to Adele Turner of Bakersfield, Calif. What
made the proceedings pretty unusual was the venue: the couple was
selected to appear on a reality TV show called "Wedding in a
Week." Tom tells QNs that the episode is expected to air in
May 2006 on ABC - and he insists that he wore his Carroll
sweatshirt through most of the tapings plus had 20 Saints alums in
attendance. Tom is currently a real estate and mortgage consultant.
His new wife is a writer.
Evan Hansen, class of 2000, of Pendleton, Ore., graduated from
Willamette University College of Law in 2003 and passed the July
2003 Oregon bar exam. Since December 2003, he has practiced family
law with Michele Grable and Associates in Pendleton. In August
2003, he married Kathryn Beckwith, another Willamette law grad, who
practices criminal defense. Their daughter Eliana Margaret Hansen
was born on August 10, 2004.
Alums in the news - literally! Casey Kyler-West, class of
2000, has been promoted to news director at KTVH TV in Helena.
Since graduating from Carroll, she has served as assistant news
director at KTVH and has done a terrific job of covering Carroll
events over the years.
Katie McCarvel, class of 2000, of Boise, Idaho, has been
nominated by the Boise School District for Idaho Teacher of the
Year. Katie has taught first grade at William Howard Taft
Elementary School for the past three years. She is heavily involved
in community service, including Taft's After School Book
Club. She also planned and implemented a health fair in partnership
with the Family Medicine Resident Physicians of Idaho.
Tom, class of 2000, and Tessa (Bley), class of 2001, McGree
announce the birth of their daughter Molly Elaine McGree on July
24, 2004.
Anna O'Donnell, class of 2000, reports that she lives in Los
Angeles, where she works as an actress and model (although she
majored in political science and philosophy!). After graduation,
she auditioned against 300 people and was chosen to attend the
American Model and Talent Convention. At the convention, she won
second in runway and honorable mention for acting. After nabbing an
agent, she has appeared in plays non-stop and was nominated for
2004 Community Theatre Oscar awards for every part she acted that
year. With a great acting coach in her corner, Anna has worked on
T.V. shows, VH1 productions and some films. (Of special note: upon
arriving in L.A., she went back to her natural brunette shade after
being a blonde for many years.)
Eric M. Schoen, class of 2000, married Maria McCormick, class of
2004, on August 6, 2005, in Helmville, Mont. Maria is currently a
special ed teacher of language arts for 6th graders at West Middle
School in Nampa, Idaho. They recently bought their first home in
Nampa, and gave birth to their first child, Olivia Lynn, on
February 1, 2005, at St. Luke's Hospital in Boise, Idaho. She
was delivered weighing 6 pounds, 3 ounces, and measuring 19 inches
long.
Dr. Chad Swanson, class of 2000, and Amy (Agostinelli) Swanson,
class of 2003, both of Helena, Mont., welcomed new daughter Adelie
May, an 8 lb., 14 oz butterball, into their lives on September 20,
2005.
Class of 2001
Carroll thespians played big roles in the Montana Shakespeare
Company's summer productions of "The Comedy of Errors" and
"King Lear." Laura Brayko, performing arts alumna
from the class of 2001, returned for her sixth Montana Shakespeare
Co. season and appeared in the roles of Courtesan in "Comedy of
Errors" and Regan in "Lear." She recently received her teaching
certificate in theater and English from the University of Idaho,
and began directing and teaching theater at Great Falls High School
in the fall. Julia Porter, performing arts class of 2005, was in
her second summer with the Shakespeare troupe and took the stage as
Luciana in "Comedy of Errors" and as
"Lear's" Cordelia. Anna Milburn, a performing
arts junior in her third year with the acting company, played Dr.
Pinch in "Comedy" and joined the "Lear"
ensemble. The talent also included Dee Smith, class of 2004,
playing Merchant in "Comedy of Errors" and
"Lear's" Oswald in this, his fourth year with the
company. In their first years with the troupe, Carroll junior Aaron
Delman and Carroll sophomore Cassie Hayes appeared in both
productions.
Allison (Hutcheson) Burr, class of 2001, married Andrew Burr on
June 25, 2005, after which they honeymooned in Maui. While Andrew
works as a manager for Fred Meyer Corp., Allison is pursuing her
nursing degree. They live in Medford, Ore.
Doreen Clark, R.N., B.A.N., class of 2001, has just been
promoted to public health nursing program manager for the North
Slope Borough Public Health Nursing Department in Barrow, Alaska.
She started her career as a public health nurse immediately after
graduating from Carroll.
J.D. Emmert, class of 2001, recently earned his master's degree
in civil engineering from the University of Colorado in Boulder,
where he received the J. Ernest Flack Graduate Fellowship
Award.
Louisa Frank, class of 2001, attended summer school at the
University of Montana in pursuit of her May 2006 education master's
degree. Afterwards, she plans to teach English in South Korea.
During the summer, she also participated in her second Spring
Meadow triathlon on July 10 in Helena. Louisa turned out to be the
only female entrant in her age bracket and won a prize (and she
knocked ten minutes off her personal best from last year!).
Patricia (Glanz) Jessell, class of 2001, has graduated from
Idaho State University with a bachelor's in dental hygiene.
She has accepted a full-time position working in Pocatello, Idaho,
where she lives with her husband Chuck Jessell, class of 2000.
Sam S. Kim, class of 2001, reports that he is in his third year
as a graduate research associate in the Arizona State University
Sociology Department's Ph.D. program. He co-authored a new
ASU study of the disparity in access to dental health care for poor
and minority groups in the United States. His work was presented on
August 13 at the American Sociological Association annual meeting

Aaron Mayernic, class of 2001, is working with troubled youth at
Shodair Hospital in Helena, Mont.
Teddi A. Olszewski, class of 2001, of Boston, Mass., announces
her engagement to Jamil H. Abbasy. Both are pursuing a degree from
Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston.
Cassi Shelly, class of 2001, of Seattle, Wash., has earned a
master's in mechanical engineering from Notre Dame and is
currently employed by Boeing in the mechanical/hydraulics group up
in Everett, Wash.
Justin Thomas, class of 2001, of Seattle, Wash., is attending
the University of Washington School of Medicine.
Trevor Uffelman, class of 2001, graduated with a juris doctorate
from Columbus School of Law-Catholic University of America in
Washington, D.C., in May 2004. He was admitted to the Montana bar
in September 2004 and is currently employed with Browning,
Kaleczyc, Berry & Hoven, P.C., in Helena.
Class of 2002
Susan Alexander, class of 2002, reports that she has earned a
master's degree in expressive therapies with a specialization
in dance therapy, which she is employing in her new job at Hope
Ranch, a faith-based program for teenage girls. Through dance,
Susan is helping her clients discover their uniqueness and feel
accepted.
Jill (Larson) Burger, class of 2002, of Helena, Mont., is
employed with Junkermier, Clark, Campanella, Stevens, P.C.,
recently received her certified public accountant designation. She
has been with the firm's Helena office since 2002 with primary
duties including tax and auditing services, along with bookkeeping
and payroll. She holds an accounting and business administration
degree from Carroll and is a member of the Montana State Society of
CPAs.
Reid Christensen, class of 2002, of Helena, reports that he and
his wife Stephanie have a young son, Cole, born on September 25,
2004. Reid finished his master's in technology in education
at Lesley University in August 2005.
Kirsten Drake, class of 2002, graduated from Idaho State
University's physician assistant program this August 2005.
She has accepted a job in family medicine in Havre, Montana.
In July 2005, Amy (Agostinelli) Swanson, class of 2002, and
husband Chad Swanson, class of 2000, moved back to Helena, Mont.,
where Chad has begun his optometry practice in the Optical Shop,
downtown on the walking mall (and is offering a 10% discount to
Carroll faculty, staff and students). They are expecting their
first child on September 12. Amy plans to return to her field of
massage therapy after the birth.
Michael Morris, class of 2002, and Dani (O'Rourke) Morris, class
of 2003, welcomed a new baby girl into their home on April 15,
2005. Isabella Jeanne Morris and she weighed 7 lbs. 6 oz. and was
19 in. long. They all live in Minneapolis, MN.
Elizabeth (Landry) Reed, class of 2002, married Kevin Reed of
Lawrence, Kansas, on August 6, 2005. They live in Lawrence, home of
the Jayhawks, where Elizabeth works as a customer service
representative for 1-800-Medicare and Kevin works in a cabinet shop
supervising the upholstery department. They send word that they
visit Montana often and hope to make it back for Homecoming 2007.
Elizabeth says, "I wish all the Saints well, for Carroll was
a great experience for me."
Tara Tibbetts, class of 2002, married Kevin Derr in Miles City,
Mont., on February 26, 2005. They honeymooned in Prague, Czech
Republic, and now reside in Fort Worth, Texas. Tara is the manager
of Corporate Operations and Communication at The Jet Powered Group,
Inc., a premiere marketing agency. Kevin is an automotive
technician at Bailey Auto Plaza, also in Fort Worth.
The University of Montana-Helena recently announced that Tricia
Tyhurst, Carroll class of 2002, has been promoted to full-time
faculty. Tricia had worked as an adjunct professor of office
technology for two years before this promotion. She previously
worked for Helena School District No. 1, the Student Assistance
Foundation and as a CARE consultant.
Class of 2003
Kyrgyzstan President Askar Akaev, whom Carroll awarded an
honorary doctorate in December 2003, left his country on March 24
after opposition protesters stormed government buildings in the
capital Bishkek. While he remains reportedly in Russia near Moscow,
Akaev has maintained his position as Kyrgyzstan's president but
recently suggested he would consider resignation. The story is
still unfolding. Carroll President Thomas Trebon is joining the
strategic planning committee involved in identifying ways to
continue important initiatives already underway linking Montana and
Kyrgyzstan. He expects that Carroll College will remain interested
in continuing student-exchange programs with colleges and
universities in Kyrgyzstan. For more on the story, check out

Jason DeShaw, class of 2003, of Plentywood, Mont., will be
played a benefit for Eagle Mount-Helena on September 30, at Bert
and Ernie's Restaurant in Helena. Musical guest, Carroll
mathematics Professor Jack Oberweiser, joined him on stage. A
free-will offering was collected, with 100% of the proceeds going
to Eagle Mount. Jason has been taking his country music on tour
throughout the Midwest and West Coast and has opened for Emerson
Drive.
Energy Laboratories in Helena, Mont., recently announced the
hiring of Stephanie Dull, class of 2003, as a chemist in the
inorganic water department. She holds a biology degree from Carroll
and a master's in forensic science from the University of New Haven
in Connecticut.
Kate Fehringer, class of 2003, is in her second year teaching
English and journalism at Shields Valley High School in Clyde Park,
Mont. She reports that she is engaged to be married on June 18,
2005, to Reid Lende, a middle school math teacher at Arrowhead
School in Paradise Valley.
Jonathan Hager, class of 2003, married Jennifer (Driscoll)
Hager, class of 2003, on October 30, 2004.
Colette Handwerk, class of 2003, will be attending graduate
school in chemistry at Dartmouth College for the 2005 school
year.
Deanna Harris, class of 2003, married Brian Satre on August 27,
2005, in Helena. She is employed at the Helena Independent Record.
The couple honeymooned in Edmonton, Alberta, and lives in
Helena.
Vincent Kalafat, class of 2003, a licensed C.P.A., continues at
the top of his class at Notre Dame Law School, where he serves as
Law Review editor and just returned from a summer clerking job in a
premiere New York law firm.
Kara Lyng, class of 2003, has just begun her third year in
Kumamoto, Japan, as a teacher in the JET Program and adores every
moment of her Japanese life. During her time in Japan, she has
looked into the maw of a live volcano, eaten raw horse, worn a
kimono, called the spirits at more than 20 shrines, visited both
atomic bomb memorials and taught more than 800 lovely Japanese
children from the ages of 1.5 to 18 years old. She has expanded her
horizons by visiting Korea and Thailand with intentions of spending
this Christmas in Australia and the rest of the year traveling
around Japan. She also sends word that she misses Carroll immensely
and hopes one day to return to the Treasure State.
Janet Novotny, class of 2003, reports that, after graduating
from Carroll, she moved to Chicago and worked as a nanny. In
September 2004, she volunteered at a home for children outside of
Cusco, Peru, where she spent a few months teaching theater and life
skills to many abused and abandoned Peruvian boys and girls and
worked in their permaculture garden. She also backpacked through
Peru and Bolivia for a month to see the sights: Machu Picchu, Lake
Titicaca, the Andes Mountains. She now works at the Local
Government Center in Concord, N.H. In September, she began her
studies to earn a master's degree in expressive therapy from
Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass.
Casey Pallister, class of 2003, is the Montana Historical
Society's 2005 recipient of the Merrill G. Burlingame-K. Ross
Toole Award for the top paper presented to the Montana Historical
Society in this year's competition. The award usually goes to
an advanced graduate student, but Casey took the prize for his
Carroll undergraduate history paper, "'Montana
Oiye': The Journey of a Japanese American from the Big Sky to
the Battlefields of Europe."
Class of 2004
Mary Ahmann, class of 2004, has joined the sales staff at
Coldwell Banker Ahmann Brothers in Helena. She graduated from
Carroll with a degree in marketing and communication.
Cathan Bordyn, class of 2004, of Helena, Mont., was the director
of the winter comedy, "Over the Tavern," which opened in January
2005 at Helena's Grandstreet Theatre. The play tells the
story of the Pazinskis, a Polish Catholic family who live in the
apartment above the family business in Buffalo, New York. Helena
audiences may have seen Bordyn's performances as Claudio in "Much
Ado about Nothing" and Thisbe in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" during
the Montana Shakespeare Company's last season. For the play's

Tavern," Cathan was accepted to the Arizona State University
Herberger College of Fine Arts' acting program with a full
tuition waiver. He began studies there this fall for a
master's in acting. Since graduating from Carroll, Bordyn has
remained active in the Montana Shakespeare Company. Bordyn reports
that he'll continue his involvement in directing for the
Montana Shakespeare Company's summer 2005 season before
heading off to ASU.
On September 3, 2005, Loren Brown, class of 2004, married
Michelle Wandler in Helena. They both live and work here in Helena,
and both are Helena natives and Helena High grads.
Catherine Marie Cuchine, class of 2004, married Michael Thayer
Cloninger on July 15, 2005, at St. Helena Cathedral in Helena.
Catie is a registered nurse at St. Peter's Hospital. The couple
honeymooned in Las Vegas, and now live in Helena.
Christopher Curtis, class of 2004, has been deployed for 18
months through the Army Reserve in support of Operation Iraqi
Freedom. His unit is currently training in California and expects
to be sent to Iraq this July. Attached to the 351st Civil Affairs
Unit, Chris will be working with the people of Iraq to rebuild the
country's infrastructure.
Breanna Dorseth, class of 2004, of Helena, Mont., has been hired
as a loan origination specialist for the Student Assistance
Foundation. She earned her business degree from Carroll.
NFL player Casey FitzSimmons, class of 2004, is the Detroit
Lions' leading receiver in two preseason games with six catches for
54 yards. He is in his third season with the Lions.
This August, Kathleen Danielle "K.D." Goebel, class
of 2004, will begin her career as a third-grade teacher at Radley
Elementary School in East Helena.
Sean P. Kelly, class of 2004, is teaching second grade at
Edgerton Elementary School in Kalispell, Mont.
Brennin Grainey, business class of 2004, and Elizabeth (Lisa)
Iverson, nursing class of 2004, were married on August 5, 2005, in
Shelby, Mont. They are now living in Missoula. After his graduation
from Carroll, Brennin went on to earn his M.B.A. from the
University of Montana and now works for Visual Learning Systems in
sales and marketing. Lisa works for Community Medical Center in the
NICU.
Tim Mitchell, class of 2004, has accepted a post-baccalaureate
Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) from the National
Institute of Health. He will be working at Johns Hopkins University
through the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) for one year to
study molecular mechanisms of drug-induced learning. He is also in
the process of applying to medical school.
Kira Renee Thomas, class of 2004, has been accepted to the international diplomacy master's program at Bond University in Gold Coast, Australia, where she will begin studying in fall 2005.
Helena Bryant Elementary School teacher Matthew Ventresca, class
of 2004, was recently featured in a news story covering his

Class of 2005
Joanie Agostinelli, class of 2005, and Nick Garreffa, class of
2004, are engaged to be married on January 7, 2006. They both live
in Spokane, Wash., where Joanie works as a realtor with Windermere
and Nick is a pharmaceutical representative for Sanofi Aventis.
Paul Barnett, class of 2005, recently joined the Helena office
of Junkermier, Clark, Campanella, Stevens, P.C., as an accountant.
He is a Carroll accounting and business administration
graduate.
Erin Fehringer, class of 2005, is working as a wetland biologist
for LeRoy Surveyors & Engineers, Inc., in Puyallup, Wash.
Denise Kile, class of 2005, of Helena, Mont., is a new financial
representative in the office of the Northwestern Mutual Financial
Network, the Reynolds Financial Group Network. After graduating
from Carroll, she completed her training in Bozeman. Her product
offerings include life and disability income insurance.
Catherine Lauinger, class of 2005, lives in Platteville, Wisc.,
where she is a graduate student in counselor education at the
University of Wisconsin and a graduate assistant at the Pioneer
Involvement Center. She expects to complete her studies and earn
her master's in counselor education with an emphasis in
college student personnel in two years.
Serena Randall, class of 2005, spent the year as an Energy
Laboratories intern who worked in sample receiving. She graduated
from Carroll in May, with her chemistry degree and joined Energy
Laboratories in Helena, Mont., full-time last summer.
At the October 1 Montana History Conference plenary session
showcasing Montana history scholars, Nick Mazanec, class of 2005,
delivered a paper, "Father Stephen Sullivan and the
Development of Catholic Education in Montana." The other two
presenters at the plenary session were graduate students, proving
again how Carroll undergrads consistently gain acceptance to
conferences where their work competes with graduate-level research.
At the conference, Nick received a large scholarship from the
Washington Foundation for his history research. A bit of history
trivia: Fr. Stephen Sullivan was the first president of Carroll
College (1910-1912)!
Hallie Peterson, class of 2005, is working as a counselor at
McCrossan Boys Ranch in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Recently, the Helena Independent Record published its
second-annual special publication of "20 Under 40," listing 20
locals under age 40 whom the IR believes represent the best and
brightest of Helena. Five of the 20 are Carroll grads. One of the
Saints selected was Naya Vanwoerkom, class of 2005. The
Independent Record reported that she lives in San Francisco,
Calif., where she now works at U.C.S.F. Medical Center as a
clinical nurse in an acute care neurology unit.
Adam Potts, class of 2005, of Helena, Mont., recently performed music from his new music release at the Carroll Campus Center. The concert celebrated the release of his debut six-song EP, "Heart on Both Sleeves." For information, call 410-0879. Buy his music at: Potts EP.
Amaya Serpa, class of 2005, reports that she lives in Pocatello, Idaho, her hometown. This summer, she worked with a private provider doing psychosocial rehab with children and adults. She is now attending Idaho State University College of Pharmacy and enjoying classes. Of her four roommates, two are Carroll alums: Lindsay Black, class of 2004, and Kim (Rybicki) Van Wyk, class of 2004. In addition, Amaya says she recently adopted a purebred Boston terrier puppy whom she named Rx (pharmacist humor - Oy!).
Stephanie Widhalm Stankey, class of 2005, was recently hired as a middle- and high-school math teacher in Cut Bank, Mont.
