Clubs

The Carroll Republican and Democrat clubs take advantage of being in the state capital and near the center of political activity through lectures, guest speakers, political debates, and special internships. Members intern on statewide elections around the country, and many others volunteer to help with local races.

Carroll student Kris Goss, ’02, traveled to Washington D.C. with four other Montana club members to accept the Most Improved State award for the Montana College Republican Federation. In just over two years, the state organization expanded from one club—on Carroll’s campus—to four more clubs on campuses around the state.

Internship Opportunities

Carroll’s location in the capital city is very beneficial to students involved in political science and pre-law. With the legislature meeting every two years, students have many opportunities to gain experience. Each year, Carroll receives more requests for interns than there are students available to fill the positions. Carroll political science students intern at:

  • US Senate Offices
  • The Montana Secretary of State’s Office
  • The State Auditor
  • Common Cause
  • The Governor’s Office
  • Local and State Campaign Offices
  • Law Offices
  • The Montana Department of Commerce
  • AFL-CIO
  • The Immigration and Naturalization Service
  • State Legislature
  • The Montana Attorney General’s Office
  • Audubon

Pre-Law Opportunities

The political science department invites members of the legal profession to speak with students about various aspects of the law, their own experiences in law school, their practice of law, or their work as judges or law school administrators. Speakers come from all fields of the legal profession--Supreme Court justices, district judges, public defenders, state agency lawyers, attorney generals, or private attorneys from small and large firms with varied specialties.

LSAT Workshop

Since the LSAT is so important for law school admission, an LSAT Workshop is held each spring. The political science department and the Carroll Academic Resource Center sponsor a “trial run” of a shortened version of the LSAT examination. After students take the trial test, they attend the LSAT Workshop. Faculty experts review the different skill areas of the LSAT, and students learn how to improve their abilities in the sections of the trial exam in which they fell short.

Pre-Law Advisor

The pre-law advisor is on hand to discuss law school options and to provide a range of law school information. He also has available LSAT preparation books, LSAT application forms, and recent law school rankings.
