Undergraduate Research Opportunities

The Biology and Chemistry Programs strongly encourage students to participate in various research programs, including Carroll's Honors Thesis Program. Students who qualify for the Honors Thesis Program carry out a research project under the direction of a biology or chemistry faculty member or a qualified research scientist, then submit a thesis based upon their investigations. Finally all students participate in a poster display of their work. Approval of the thesis enables students to graduate with honors. (Photo: Field studies of Montana wetlands)

Students may also pursue their research interests off campus at accredited research institutions through programs such as NSF's Research Experience for Undergraduates. More information on REU's can be found at: http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5517&org=NSF

Help from the professors

“While working on my thesis project, I was impressed with the amount of help the professors were willing to give, yet I was always the one making the final decision. Dr. Brehe was willing to help me obtain whatever I needed. It is unusual for under-graduates to have so much control over their research. I believe that my education has been comparable to graduate school level because of this freedom. It gave me more ownership of my thesis.”
