Latin American Studies Program

This program provides a rigorous study of 1) Latin American affairs, 2) the acquisition of Spanish, 3) completion of practical and theoretical projects pertinent to specific student and faculty interest and expertise (i.e., history, political science, Hispanic linguistics, Hispanic literature, economics, theology, biology, comparative literature, comparative education, anthropology or sociology). Our objective is to provide its participants with a thorough perspective of the people, history conditions and aspirations of this region of the world. The methods of evaluation applied to the various components of the program will aim to foster a critical and transformative experience for the participants. Students will emerge from the LAS minor with experience in an Hispanic community, fluency in Spanish and a critical and informed perspective toward the multiple aspects of Latin American societies. Both written and oral language use in the classroom and laboratory will focus on Latin America.

Considering the growth in the Hispanic population nationally and the expanding trade relations throughout the Americas, this minor will make our graduates more marketable in an era of rapid globalization. Moreover, we are broadening our offerings of global diversity courses and generating greater cultural understanding among our general undergraduate students.
