Art - not for school, but for life.
Art and human life are intertwined. It has always been that way. It will probably always continue to be that way. This is not a casual statement, but a provable point. The historical record is predated by the artistic record. Before writing there was art. Much of what we know from the ancient past is based on art and architecture. These give us the only clues we have for many ancient civilizations. Archaeologists recognize that 30,000 years ago intelligent humans were producing magnificent visual art on the walls and ceiling of caves, such as in Lascaux, France and Altimira, Spain. Imagine our ancient ancestors painting a 20-foot bison on a cave ceiling, deep under the ground. It must have had an enormous value for their lives. Lives fraught with peril.
Now move to the 20th Century, when the scientists at NASA were designing the Voyager series of interstellar spacecraft. These spacecraft were intended to explore the neighborhood of our solar system, and then continue on into the vast expanse of space. This meant that they might possibly be encountered by other intelligent life. How could humanity use Voyager to communicate meaningful information to any intelligent life that encountered it? The information would need to define who we are, and what is important about our lives. The solution the scientists chose contained music, visual images and stories of the human race, in other words, our Art.
