As coordinator for the Girl Scouts' "uniquely ME!" program in Spokane, Wash., schools, Keely Eschenbacher (right), class of 2006, focuses her message on the impact of the media on teen girl self-image. A course on gender communication during her study of psychology at Carroll stirred her awareness of media messages and ads that make women and men feel bad about their appearance. Begun five years ago with a grant from Unilever and its Dove Self-Esteem Fund, the "uniquely ME!" program helps girls ages 8 to 17 embrace a wider definition of beauty than cultural messaging routinely offers.
