Welcome to Carroll's electronic newsletter QuickNotes, a weekly (and in summer, bi-weekly) synopsis of the news and happenings around Carroll College. QuickNotes is intended to keep Carroll's students, alumni, friends and employees in touch with college accomplishments and activities. It is not a message board but an informational resource for the Carroll community and its supporters.

Please forward your copy of QuickNotes on to alumni and friends of Carroll to keep them up-to-date about campus events.

Also on Friday, join us on the "Alumni Walk" in front of St. Albert's Hall at 1:15 a.m. for the unveiling of the bricks. When you see our Class of 1958 Golden Grads on campus, welcome them home for their 50th jubilee.

PARTING SHOTS

Leave it to the Saints to go out in style: Two weekends ago, about 20 seniors trekked to the Montana Learning Center to tackle several long overdue service tasks: window washing, raking leaves, and moving furniture, to name a few. The Senior Service Project idea was formed with the goal of reminding Carroll's new crop of grads to go out into the world to serve. Check out the photos of their service project at:  http://www.carroll.edu/students/service/photos.cc.

WE'LL FIT YOU WITH A CONCRETE CANOE

canoe 4.jpgHey, it's better than concrete shoes, and it floats! Recently, a group of 13 students representing the Carroll College ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) Student Chapter just got back from competing in the 2008 ASCE Northwest Regional Student Conference at Portland State University. The two main components of the conference were a concrete canoe competition and a steel bridge competition. For the third year, Carroll entered the concrete canoe contest with their entry, "Mr. Boat." That's the good news. While Mr. Boat boldly plied the waves despite an unfortunate hole in the side for several races, the good ship finally succumbed in the next-to-last round.

IT TAKES MORE THAN TWO TO TANGO

tango qns.jpgThis Friday, May 9, you are cordially invited to support Carroll's in-residence professional ballet troupe, Artisan Dance, during a night of live dancing to tango music presented by select Helena Symphony musicians. For the first time, Carroll's Arthur Vining Davis Dance Studio, downstairs in the Campus Center, will open to the community for social dance to live music by outstanding artists. The evening will also feature special guest dance performances by Isha Lloyd of the Sacramento Ballet and Sallyann Mulcahy, Carroll's artist in residence and director of dance, with partner Michael McNeilly, professor of performing arts.

Renowned concert pianist Mark Walker will play the grand piano accompanied by cellist Rebecca Hartka (of Bozeman), Jill Miller on clarinet, Dana Nehring on bassoon and Ellie Parker on violin. Live tango music will be performed throughout the night, and the audience will be welcome to dance or simply enjoy the beauty of this passionate music from Argentina. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., with live music starting at 8 p.m. Gourmet desserts will be complimentary. A no-host bar, with service by the Knights of Columbus, will be available. Limited edition tango art by photographer Michael Russell will be on sale at the event. Tickets are $25 per person and available on campus by calling 447-5508 or 447-5415. Tickets are also available at the main branch of American Federal Savings Bank at 1400 Prospect. This event benefits Artisan Dance in its upcoming summer season of professional ballet in Helena.

SAINTS ON SALE

The Saints' Shoppe in the Campus Center is holding its annual Spring Sale now through Friday, with all clothing and gift items 20% off. Book buyback is also now through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily in the Saints' Shoppe.

SEEING A LOT OF RED FLAGS

flags for fallen qns.jpgRecently, Carroll's College Democrats were in the news for their stealth and initiative in erecting 4,056 small red flags on campus to honor U.S. service members killed in Iraq. For more on the story, see: http://www.helenair.com/articles/2008/05/01/top/top/50lo_080501_flags.txt.

AN EYE ON THE VOTE

student eye art.jpgStudents in Carroll's Art Appreciation class taught by Katie Knight collaborated to create "The Questions Behind Our Eyes," an art installation now on display in the main floor hallway of St. Charles Hall, between the mail room and Art Gallery (room 034). The exhibit combines photography, drawings, and text to create art that asks questions pertinent to the upcoming election and the future of the world as we know it. In the multilayered work, eyes spin and questions appear in front of colorful drawings the students produced for this provocative work.
